“A man’s life is unfortunately much too short to assimilate Beethoven’s Opus 106,” declared Ferruccio Busoni. It takes all the carefree spirit and panache of youth to dare to take on a work that, by its composer’s own admission, pushes the technical limits of the instrument. Chengzi Li admits to being literally “inhabited” by the “Hammerklavier”. For her Gstaad debut, she is performing it alongside other piano masterpieces – by Chopin and Scriabin – as well as a Fantasy by the Chinese composer Jianzhong Wang, in which “clouds of colour chase the moon”.
